Happy Flag Day, Florence! Today, we commemorate the adoption of the American flag by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The first U.S. flag looked a little different from the one we proudly fly today. Like our current flag, it featured 13 alternating red and white stripes representing the original colonies. In the upper left corner, however, it displayed 13 white stars arranged in a circle rather than the 50 stars we see today. This circle of stars symbolized a new constellation and the unity of the colonies as equal members of a new nation. Often referred to as the “Betsy Ross flag,” this design became the first official flag of the United States and remains a powerful symbol of the independence, unity, and determination that shaped our nation’s founding.
